Biology Experiment
During their biology and chemistry lessons, the sixth-form classes carried out an interesting experiment. Escherichia coli bacteria were genetically modified by inserting the GFP (Green Fluorescent Protein) gene into their DNA; this protein occurs naturally in the jellyfish Aequorea victoria. As a result of this modification, the bacteria began to produce the fluorescent protein: when illuminated with ultraviolet light, they glowed a vivid green, as can be seen in the photos.
